One of the most important elements of a poem is the title. Poets and Writers magazine offers an extensive look at titling poems. Two of my favorite methods are Expository titles which set the scene or context of the poem, and Fugitive titles that become part of the poem.

Franco Amati uses an expository title in “venus in her clamshell thing.” The strangeness of it draws my interest immediately. Likewise, J.L. Littlejohn’s “Where Bones Gather Above Dirt” and Alistair J. Kraft’s “Spring is an Easier Time to Die.” Expository titles not only place the poem in a context but also provide something mysterious, inviting the reader to enter the poem.

Lise R’s “The Silent House” is haunting as is the line “i lay my hands on our / life (pretending / myself away) to write / through our swaying / foundation” from Amanda Weir-Gertzog’s “All the Sorry.”

Here is the full list of poems that intrigued me this week.
