There’s a cold you can see…

There’s a cold you can see,
even before pillows of breath rise.
Hard edges, dusted crust
rigid as cement.
You know, without breaking through,
the harsh crunch of it.
Gray-stalked alder; frozen,
unable to bend even if the wind tried.
